Ever more concerned about preserving the environment by engaging in an active approach to sustainable development, the FUAJ has invested in the implementation of the Green Key label in its establishments. To date, 35 youth hostels have been awarded the label, and this number is increasing every year.
The international "Green Key" label
The Green Key, created in 1994 in Denmark, is an international label : it rewards tourist accommodations for their dynamism in environmental management. This label was adapted in 1998 to French campsites by the French office of the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe (of-FEEE), in consultation with the professionals (FNHPA). Then, it was extended to hotels and gradually developed to all categories of tourist accommodation.
Since the beginning of 2010, HI France has participated in the adaptation of this label to youth hostels.
This label also aims at environmental education. The evolving criteria for awarding this label ensure that efficient environmental management is maintained.
