Hostelling International (HI), is a non-profit organization, founded in 1932 with the mission of one of the first definitions of sustainable tourism.
“To promote the education of young people of all nations, especially those of limited means, encouraging them to have a greater knowledge of, love for, and attention to the rural world, and an appreciation for the cultural values of the cities and towns of the four corners of the world and, to offer youth hostels and other accommodations in which there should be no distinction of origin, nationality, color of skin, religion, sex, class, or political opinions, where they can thus develop a better understanding of others, both at home and abroad.”
HI Youth Hostel Network
The HI network represents 60 member associations and 38 affiliated hostels in 57 countries and exceptional destinations.
As passionate advocates of sustainable tourism, we’re committed to connecting youth and local communities in a peaceful and respectful manner. The “HI Standards”, revised in 2019, guarantee our guests safe, clean and quality accommodation and warm hospitality in all our youth hostels. At the heart of our approach is to offer unique experiences to young people from all over the world and the possibility to meet, learn and discover each other, beyond all prejudices.
The quality of our youth hostels and the professionalism of our staff remain at the heart of our strategy with the “HI Standards” and the HI-Quality & Sustainability certification system. More than ever, travelers are looking for unique and authentic experiences that youth hostels can offer.
Our commitment to sustainable tourism
At HI, we are committed to creating a global network of sustainable youth organizations and youth hostels. With over 100 years of experience, we are continually working to improve and expand our network, working with governments and voluntary organizations to implement quality procedures and high standards everywhere.
The HI Sustainability Charter – Our Sustainable Tourism Policy was adopted by our General Assembly in 2010 by HI and each member association. It’s based on the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). Together, we aim to improve understanding of sustainable tourism practices.
Our strategy is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SD Gs). The SDGs are a critical focus for us and each of our programs and projects contribute to them. HI is an affiliate member of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO ) and is responsible for the UNWTO SDG support group.
The network has not been spared by the health crisis, far from it, but it has proven its resilience and the importance of its values and its investments in sustainable development.
